This exhibition brings attention to the discovery of unexploded bombs and shells in San Juan and nearby districts, many of which date back to the Second World War. Excavations around the reservoir site and surrounding neighborhoods have revealed remnants of air raids and artillery that once devastated Manila in 1945. “Shadows of War” showcases these dangerous artifacts in a controlled and secure display, explaining the science and caution required to preserve them for study.
The exhibition provides historical context on why San Juan was repeatedly struck during the war. Maps highlight Japanese defense lines and American bombing routes, while eyewitness accounts recall the destruction and fear that lingered long after the war ended. Multimedia presentations demonstrate how bomb disposal teams continue to find and safely deactivate ordnance decades later.
A central gallery features deactivated shells, fragments, and shrapnel, illustrating the destructive power of these weapons while reminding audiences of the resilience of communities that rebuilt from the ruins. “Shadows of War” not only reflects on wartime destruction but also emphasizes the importance of heritage protection in areas shaped by conflict.
