Voices from the Well
Sound and story transform a gallery into a space where history is heard, felt, and remembered.
Limited-time exhibition

Centered on oral histories and folklore, this exhibition transforms one gallery into a listening space. At its core is a circular installation resembling a stone well. Visitors lean over its rim to hear recordings of elders recounting legends—stories of enchanted springs, hidden tunnels, and wartime escape routes tied to San Juan’s water systems.
Along the walls, illustrated panels depict these tales in visual form, paired with historical notes that separate fact from embellishment. Old photographs of local wells, aqueduct entrances, and community gatherings frame the narratives, grounding folklore in real places. A display case shows everyday objects—earthen jars, buckets, and ladles—that appear frequently in these stories, reminding visitors that the mythical often grows from the ordinary.
Children’s drawings and school projects inspired by the tales are mounted as a living archive, while a small theater corner plays dramatized versions performed by local storytellers. The exhibition design emphasizes intimacy and imagination, encouraging visitors to sit, listen, and reflect. “Voices from the Well” is less about objects alone and more about how stories—displayed through sound, art, and memory—form a cultural heritage as vital as physical artifacts.
